Ayurveda for Abdominal Diseases
The abdomen is the area below the chest and above the pelvis and is often in a laymen’s term called the
belly.
Obesity
Obesity means having too much
body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much.
It is a type of disorder complex disorder where there is an accumulation of
excessive amount of body fat. Obesity isn't just a cosmetic concern, it poses
as a major risk to your health as it increases
the risk of diseases like heart disease, diabetes , high blood pressure,
gallbladder disease, breathing problems, gynaecological diseases and cancer . Being
very obese means you are particularly likely to have various health problems.
One is considered obese when that
individual's body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher. For most adults:

a BMI of 18.5 – 24.9 is considered as normal
·
BMI of 25 - 29.9 is considered as overweight
·
BMI of 30
- 39.9 is considered obese
·
BMI of 40
or above is severely obese
BMI is not every time
definitive diagnose for obesity , people who are muscular sometimes have a high BMI, without
excess fat – but for most people, it can be a useful indication of whether they
may be overweight.
The main cause of obesity is when
you eat too many calories and burn too little calories. Obesity does not happen
in day, when over a period of time a
person continues to have a unhealthy diet and is inactive it results to
obesity. Sometimes obesity can be caused due to lack of sleep or as a side
effect of certain mediation.
As per
Ayurveda our body has seven main dhatus and in obese people the Medha dhatu is in excess. Ayuyrveda
prescribes ayurvedic medicines along
with various oil magssages and ditery corrections to remove obstructed Kapha
and let all Dhatus nourish equally.
Indigestion
Indigestion also known as dyspepsia
is the feeling of discomfort in the
upper belly or abdomen. It usually
occurs during or right after eating. You know you have indigestion when
you get a burning sensation or pain in
the area between the naval the lower part of the breastbone just after a
meal or an unpleasant feeling of fullness that comes on
soon after a meal begins or when the meal is over.
Other symptoms of indigestion
include – Acidic taste in mouth, bloated stomach, belching, nausea, flatulence,
burning in the stomach or upper abdomen and
abdominal pain.
Indigestion is
a common problem in adults and can occur at any point of time. Usually
indigestion is triggered due to- regularly eating greasy and
spicy food, drinking too much alcohol, overeating, stress and anxiety, drinking
too much caffeine and excessive smoking of tobacco.
Sometimes
indigestion is also caused due to some other complications like gallstones, gastric, swelling of the pancreas
(pancreatitis), Ulcers (stomach or intestinal ulcer) and use of certain
medicines such as antibiotics, aspirin, steroids and over-the-counter pain medicines.
People
suffering from indigestion must not eat spicy and greasy food. A light food
with occasional fasting is suggested. Drinking plain soda water gives immediate
relief to bloated stomach and acidity.
One should avoid the use of alcohol, tobacco, meat, red pepper, sour foods,
pickles, strong tea and coffee and sweets. It is recommended that when
suffering from indigestion one must drink lots of water and stay away from
stress and anxiety.
As per
Ayurveda indigestion occurs when the body agni is imbalanced by the dietary and
the environmental factors.
Constipation
Constipation
is defined medically as fewer than three stools per week and severe
constipation as less than one stool per week. Almost every person has suffered
from constipation at some point of time or other. Constipation is the symptom
where a person has trouble passing stool in regular basis. Constipated people
generally suffer from painful bowel movement and often experience straining,
bloating and the feeling of full bowel.
You can
consider yourself constipated if - you have two or more of the following for at
least 2- 3 months: Strain during a bowel
movement most of the times, frequent hard stools, Incomplete evacuation and
three or fewer bowel movements in a week.
Constipation
happens when there is a problem in colon. When the colon does not function properly,
the result is a build-up of offensive and highly poisonous wastes in the bowel,
which not only contaminate the body through absorption with the blood but also disrupts
the whole digestive process.
Some of the
common causes of constipation are- inadequate intake of water, lack of fibre in
diet, insufficient activity or exercise , stress, overuse of laxatives, Irritable
bowel syndrome, pregnancy, lack of sleep and anxiety, eating disorder and in
some cases it is due to side effects of some medication.
According to
Ayurveda constipation is caused due to aggravation of doshas and toxin build up in the body.
Hiccoughs
A hiccough
also commonly known as the hiccup is a sudden, reflex spasm of the diaphragm
muscle. When this muscle spasms, the vocal cords snap shut, producing the
hiccup sound. The general cause of hiccup is some irritation of the nerve of
the diaphragm, which produces abrupt contractions. Disorder of the digestion
may also be the cause of hiccups.
In most of the
cases hiccups go away on their own
within a short period of time but in some cases it might last for 3- 48 hours
and disturb the eating and sleeping habits. Prolonged hiccups occur due
to some medical problem and needs attention.
According to
Ayurveda, hiccups are triggered because of the aggravation and upward movement
of vayu. Disorder in the digestion process can also cause hiccup.
The main
Causes of hiccups are- suddenly swallowing any irritating or spicy substance,
diseases of the pleura, uremia, alcoholism, use of certain medications and
drugs, bladder irritation, stomach disorder and emotional anxiety and stress.
Acidity
Acidity is a
very common health problem but can pose grave dangers if left untreated or
unchecked. Acidity occurs when there is excess secretion of acids in the
gastric glands and the intestine of the stomach. When the acid secretion is
more than normal, we get the feeling of heartburn. Our intestines and stomach
produces acid to break down and digest the food, this is a regular and normal
process.
The most
common causes of acidity are – bad dirt habits, eating junk and greasy food,
not chewing the food properly, inadequate intake of water, being stressed while eating, over consumption of
alcohol , smoking, skipping breakfast, not eating proper meals in the day and
in certain cases intake of medications and drugs. Basically a undisciplined
lifestyle with improper combination of food can result into acidity.
Common
symptoms of acidity are- burning sensation in the stomach, heartburn, sour
burps, feeling of nausea, lack of interest in foods and dyspepsia.
Frequent
acidity is very bad for the overall health and can lead to growth of stomach
ulcers.
Ayurveda
believes that those individuals who suffer from an pitta imbalance are more susceptible to indigestion, acidity and
ulcers. Stress, anger, impatience, greasy
spicy foods, and environmental factors such as extreme heat can aggravate
pitta.
